Cactus On Mars with the Mark Attebery Ensemble

This CD features music for ballet & modern dance commissioned by California choreographers.  It includes an eclectic array of instruments: triple-chambered ocarinas, bamboo bass flute, Lakota cedar flute, Renaissance flutes, recorders plus conventional classical winds & percussion.

mars

Included on the CD is The Emperor and the Nightingale, a ballet based on the Hans Christian Andersen story.  An emperor obsesses over a beautiful nightingale’s song. An infatuation with a mechanical bird plunges him into a deathly struggle with forces symbolized by the two birds.  Chinese instruments and western classical winds engage in battle with modern electronica.

The Attebery Ensemble also performs excerpts from Stan's Retreat for woodwinds, mallet percussion, soprano voice and string bass.  Rounding out this CD of dance works is Departure of the Youngsters, a dark soundscape performed on experimental clay winds.
